Helps Windows users leave personal OneDrive safely: free check, download cloud files in place, copy Desktop and Documents back, verify to 0 missing, then guide the stop-backup steps

Leave OneDrive without losing a single file

When OneDrive backup takes over your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures, many files quietly end up living only in the cloud, leaving behind just placeholder icons on your PC. If you disconnect OneDrive then, those files become unreadable. SafeExit for OneDrive starts with a free check to show you which files are cloud-only, which ones can't be read, and whether your disk has enough room. Once you decide to leave, it downloads cloud-only files into their existing OneDrive folders as real local files, copies Desktop, Documents, and Pictures back to their default locations (or a location you choose), verifies every file down to 0 missing, and then guides you through Microsoft's official stop-backup and OneDrive shutdown steps. It never deletes any of your source files.

Feature set

Free check

Scans your personal OneDrive in read-only mode. Clearly lists cloud-only files, unreadable files, path issues (like junctions, over-long paths, and case-only name clashes), and whether you have enough disk space. You can export a Markdown summary for free.

Exit plan

Lays out a clear plan from the check: which files need downloading, where each managed folder will be copied back, and how much extra space is required. Nothing changes until you confirm.

Download and copy

Downloads cloud-only files into their existing OneDrive folders as real local files, without moving them to another drive. Then copies the managed Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders back to their default locations or a location you choose. Originals stay where they are.

Verify file by file

Compares every copied file against its OneDrive original with SHA-256. Files that stay in the OneDrive folder are only confirmed to be fully downloaded and openable. The result reads "N / N files verified, 0 missing"; any failure blocks the next steps.

Restore Desktop, Documents, and Pictures

Only after verification passes, points Desktop, Documents, and Pictures back to their Windows default locations or the targets in your plan. A snapshot is saved first, and you can restore the previous locations from Settings.

Resumes where you left off

Progress is saved to a local task record. If you pause, lose the network, shut down, or the app crashes, reopening resumes from the last checkpoint without redoing finished files.

Guided disconnect

Once verification passes, guides you through Microsoft's official "Stop folder backup" and "Shut down OneDrive" steps in order, and checks their status. Uninstalling can't be detected automatically, so that step is yours to confirm.

Exit report

Generates a Markdown exit report covering the verification result, which files were copied back, which stayed in the OneDrive folder, any renamed files, and any leftover OneDrive folder.

In depth

Why you can't just click disconnect

When OneDrive backup is turned on, your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders are moved straight into the OneDrive folder. To save local disk space, Windows keeps many files only in the cloud—leaving placeholder icons on your PC that look like real files, but actually download only when opened.

If you simply unlink OneDrive at that point, those placeholders become completely inaccessible, while Desktop and Documents remain pointed at the OneDrive folder. SafeExit for OneDrive takes care of the critical phase before disconnecting: bringing your files safely back to your PC, verifying that not a single one is missing, and only then walking you through the disconnect.

The complete process

  1. Free read-only check: automatically finds your personal OneDrive, scans it read-only, and lists the risks.
  2. Review details and space: browse problem files by category and confirm the target drive has room.
  3. Build the exit plan: see which files will be downloaded, where each folder will be copied back, and how much extra space it takes.
  4. Buy the full exit (one-time purchase).
  5. Download cloud files: turn cloud-only files into real local files in their existing OneDrive folders, without moving them to another drive.
  6. Copy back: copy Desktop, Documents, and Pictures to their default locations or the targets in your plan; originals stay put.
  7. Verify: compare copied files against their originals; confirm in-place files are fully downloaded and openable.
  8. Restore folder locations: only after every file passes, point Desktop, Documents, and Pictures back to their default or planned locations; a snapshot is saved first.
  9. Stop backup and shut down OneDrive: follow the official order — stop folder backup, then shut down OneDrive.
  10. Final recheck and report: rescan after disconnecting, then generate a Markdown exit report.

If anything interrupts steps 5 through 8, reopening the app lets you continue where you left off.

What the check looks for

Category What it means
Cloud placeholders Files stored only in the cloud with no real content on your PC; must be downloaded before unlinking
Unreadable files Files that cannot be opened or read; need separate attention
Path problems Directory junctions, overly long paths, or naming quirks that could fail during copying
Conflicting files Files that differ only by upper/lower case, or would overwrite each other when copied to the target
Insufficient space The target drive doesn’t have enough room to hold all your files

The check runs in pure read-only mode: it never downloads, moves, or modifies any of your files.

Verification methods

What is checked How
Files copied back to this PC Each copy is compared with its OneDrive original by SHA-256; only matching content passes
Files left in the OneDrive folder Confirmed to be fully downloaded and openable

Every file must pass before the folder-restore and stop-backup steps unlock. Files renamed because a same-named file already existed are counted only after you confirm them in the review list.

Privacy, scope, and system requirements

All checks and file verification run on your PC. No Microsoft account sign-in, no account system of its own, no file names or paths uploaded, and the app contains no telemetry. Cloud files are downloaded on your machine through Windows’ cloud file API; they never pass through our servers. If you hit a problem and need help, you can export diagnostic logs manually and send them to us.

  • System: Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later, or Windows 11; x64. The personal OneDrive client must be installed and signed in.
  • Account scope: personal OneDrive only; work and school accounts are outside this version.
  • Disk space: the target must hold all files; the free check tells you in advance.
  • Report format: Markdown with a JSON appendix at the end; PDF and HTML are not available.
  • Release status: available now on the Microsoft Store.

Who it is for

  • Everyday Windows users: OneDrive quietly took over Desktop, Documents, and Pictures, and you want your PC back to normal without wrestling with sync settings
  • People with lots of files: Many files live only in the cloud, and you want to be sure each one has really landed on this PC before disconnecting
  • People helping family with their PC: Moving files for parents, where you need to check first, execute safely, and keep a clear record at the end

FAQ

How is this different from OneDrive's built-in "Stop backup" button?

Microsoft's own "Stop backup" only changes the Windows folder locations; it does not guarantee the files come back with them. SafeExit for OneDrive handles the critical work before you disconnect: find the cloud-only files, download them back, verify every one, restore Desktop, Documents, and Pictures, and only then walk you through the official disconnect steps.

Will it delete files from the cloud or my PC?

Never. The app never deletes any source files, and does not perform any irreversible actions before all files pass verification. Your original OneDrive folder stays completely intact.

Do I need to sign in to my Microsoft account? Does it upload my files?

Neither. The app does not sign in to a Microsoft account, does not upload file names or paths, runs all checks locally, and contains no telemetry.

How much does it cost?

The check is free: scanning, risk details, disk space assessment, the exit plan, and a Markdown risk summary. Downloading, copying back, verification, restoring folder locations, guided stop-backup, and the exit report belong to the full exit, a one-time purchase.

What happens if my Wi-Fi drops or my PC restarts mid-way?

No worries at all. Progress is saved continuously. Once you reopen the app, it resumes right where it stopped, without wasting time re-downloading or re-copying finished files.

Does it support work or school accounts?

The current version supports personal OneDrive accounts only, not organization accounts managed by work or school.

Where can I download it?

It is available now on the Microsoft Store — use the Microsoft Store button at the top of this page. Windows only.
